Final Post - End of Book Thoughts

Your journey with My Friend the Enemy has come to an end, I hope you enjoyed it. I want you to spend some time reflecting on the book. Think about the characters, the time period, and the main events in the story.

• What did you enjoy most about the book? 
• Was there anything you didn't like about the book? 
• What did you think about the way the story ended? 
• Was there anything you wish would have happened that didn't? 

Please use specific details from the story to support your thinking. Be honest about your feelings and thinking, this is your time to reflect on your book. Make sure to answer ALL questions.

Week 5 Discussion Question

Hazel is worried about Sogoji being discovered and wants to come up with a plan. Sogoji tells Hazel, "If they find, they find. It is shikatoganai." He explains it to mean that, "Something must happen. Can't be helped." How is Sogoji so calm about his current situation when Hazel is not? Do you believe Sogoji's thinking to be true? Are there some things that can't be helped? How can you apply this to Jed 'missing in action?'

Week 4 Discussion Question

Frank finally comes home for Christmas, but Hazel notices that he has changed. War seems to have changed all of them. How has Frank changed since he left? What event caused him and Hazel to reconnect? What do you think the light in the sky way? Make sure to use examples from the book and explain all of your thinking.

Week 3 Discussion Question

In Chapter 15, Mr. Lanski fills Hazel in on Sogoji's parents and how he grew up. There is a saying that states, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." Hazel finds out this information after she has upset Sogoji. Now that she has a better understanding of his past, how does it change her feelings towards Sogoji? Does she feel bad about what she has said and how she has judged him? Mr. Lanski also says to her that, " Sogoji is sort of in between. He's not American, he's not Japanese. May need a little help figuring out what he is." What does Mr. Lanski mean by this? How can Hazel help Sogoji figure out 'what he is?'
