Week 4 Discussion Question

Frank finally comes home for Christmas, but Hazel notices that he has changed. War seems to have changed all of them. How has Frank changed since he left? What event caused him and Hazel to reconnect? What do you think the light in the sky way? Make sure to use examples from the book and explain all of your thinking.

Make sure to answer your question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your thinking. Type it in your blogging doc first so you can make corrections if necessary. Make sure to look at your conventions before you submit.

  1. How Frank has changed since he left is that he is more concerned about the war. Also, he and Hazel aren't as mean to each other. I know this because according to the text Frank before he left was not that concerned about the war and he is concerned about the war more than he was before. Hazel and Frank aren’t as mean to each other because it would be hard for them to be mean to each other because of the war. The event that caused Hazel and Frank to reconnect was the part when Hazel told Frank about the light in the sky. I know this because they did not reconnect before Hazel told Frank about the light. After they were connected because they were both trying to figure out the light in the sky. I think the light in the sky was a kamikaze pilot. I think this because according to the text the light was falling with fire around it. Kamikaze pilots crash their planes. If they crashed their planes it would have fire around and it did.

    1. I think you are right that Frank and Hazel have matured because of the war. Their relationship is less about siblings fighting and they have connected on another level. Do you think that the kamikaze was also responsible for the bomb?

    2. Jack I agree that Hazel telling Frank about the light in the sky was a big part of them reconnecting. I am curious how you developed your opinion that "Hazel and Frank aren't as mean to each other" now, because of the war. Can you give some evidence from the text that shows they were mean to each other before he left? I did not think of his change in this way and I would love for you to back up your opinion with examples from the book so I understand better where you are coming from!

  2. Frank has changed since he left in three ways. The first is that he is stronger, more consistent, and faster. The army training has worked him to make him stronger. The second is that he is smart and knows what things are dangerous. When he and Hazel find the bomb, he knows what it is, and has knowledge on how to save and protect her. The third is that he is more hard-working than before. He can and will finish a job. The event that caused them to bond again is finding the bomb, and I think that that is because Frank would have saved Hazel. I think that the light in the sky was the bomb, and I think it went off in mid-air. I do not think the bomb they found was active.

  3. Frank has changed a lot from the war. He has started to smoke for example. On page 183 tells that Mama found some cigarettes (captains butts), “Mama was already upset when she found some half smoked cigarette in his room.” That shows that maybe he did that he did that when he was away with his friends. Also, he doesn’t want to do New Years Eve with the family. The author wrote, “Frank was going to a party given by one of his buddies from Odell.” Lastly, he doesn’t follow his parents rules. on page 185 shows this is true, “Estelle managed to be home by 12:30 her curfew, but Frank got home an hour late 1:30.” He is turning into a real teen-ager.
The event that I think caused Hazel and Frank to re-connect is the hike to the picnic. They started talking about what has happened and what they feel like. Also, when they found the bomb. It shows that Frank really cares for Hazel.
I think the light in the sky was the bomb that Hazel and Frank found because that is how stories usually work, people found the thing that they saw. They said it looked like a Hot Air Balloon, I think that it was a Hot Air Balloon that got hit by a bomb. I think that the bomb didn’t go off.

    1. Sutton this is a great response! You really captured Frank's changes in your description of the smoking and his disregard for family rules. Nice job quoting the next to support your observations. I felt sad when Hazel wanted to talk to him and he was not really listening, acting like anything she had to say was just "kid stuff." The hike definitely helped them reconnect, once Frank realized that Hazel had seen something significant. :)

  4. The first question is how has Frank changed since he left? Frank has changed the way he looks, the way he acts, and the people he hangs out with. He looks “ brown, fit, slimmed down, and bulked-up and a whole inch taller.” He also looked a lot taller and more like a man. He had grown and was a 16 year old now, not like the 5 year old boy he used to be. He acts like a grown up and thinks that he is now able to smoke cigarettes and do a bunch of older kid things. He wants to be able to do stuff like an older person would and he wants to be that person, not like the old Frank at all. And last, Frank likes to hang out with his friends who can do grown up things and talk about things they shouldn't be saying. This also gives them a chance to leave his little sister Hazel and his family. Frank has changed quite a bit and those 3 reasons are just the start.

The second question is what event caused Frank and Hazel to reconnect? I think it could be multiple reasons. The one that I think is the most important, is when they both thought the bomb had gone off and they both reacted and Frank and Hazel helped each other and felt the others heart beat like their own. Another one would be when Hazel tells him about when she saw the light in the sky. Frank finally puts down his book and actually listens to Hazel and what she is talking about. She feels like there is still an old Frank, “ Who had studied Japanese in order to know his enemy and spent hours on a hill looking for foreign planes.” This shows that finally they have reconnected.

The third question is what do you think the light in the sky was? There can be many different answers to this question, but the thing that makes the most sense to me is that it was a bomb. I think it was a bomb because it floated to the same exact place were they both found the bomb that they thought was going to go off.

    1. Great response Ava. I think you bring up a great point that it wasn't just the bomb that brought them together.

    2. I love the organization of your response, Ava! You made very clear points and your thinking was easy to follow. I like how you pointed out that when Hazel tells Frank about when she saw the light in the sky he finally puts down his book and actually listens to her. That was definitely a significant event that helped them to reconnect.

  5. When Frank came back from the war, Hazel and her family could tell that he change a lot. Like lots of people who go to war, the war makes them more strong and grown up. That is good for people who want to live a successful life, or a big fancy life, for that they want want to be strong. But for Frank, it kind of took away his friendly, tender hearted family life. Hazel could tell that he changed from being her really close brother, to a not so close friend. If you want to think of it by a picture, it was like his smile got smaller when he went to the war. The event that caused Frank and Hazel to reconnect was probably when they both went up to the hill and had a picnic. That caused them to reconnect because they got to spend time together and just talk and hang out. On the hill, they didn't really have to think about anything. They could just relax.

I think the light in the sky was a plane crash burning and falling down. It might have even been a kamikaze soldier crashing down. I think it was that because it seemed like that was a big thing in wars for Japs. I also think that a bright light would have to be big for someone to see it fall out of the sky. I was just wondering where the light went? If it was a plane then where did it go? Hopefully it wasn't a bomb or something dangerous. But you never know what could happen in a war.

    1. Caroline, I really love your image of Frank's smile getting smaller while he was away as a way to describe the change in his character. I agree that the hike gave them time to spend together and that helped them reconnect. I think it was also more than just hanging out--they were on a mission together, united in a cause with a common enemy just like they used to be, and that helped them reconnect too.
